Minutes
of the Promotion Sub-Committee meeting held on the 6/05/08
Present: G. Watson, J. Harper, R. Smart. P. Arneric
Correspondence: Letter from Jock Strattan from the R.S.L asking
would we release pigeons on Remembrance Day.
Letter from Nova giving contact names of 5AA’s Promotions Manager
1. Paul Arneric Paul presented his ideas
for promoting the sport.
He suggests the SAHPA should approach Scott Transport, using a
consultant to do a presentation to the company on our behalf, for the
purpose of sponsorship and transportation of our pigeons. If this were
to happen, the money currently being spent for freight could be used in
prize money. Hopefully this would attract new members and help to
retain our current ones. We would offer our unit for advertising.
2. The releasing of the pigeons at the ANZAC day
march was successful with channel 9 giving good commentary. ABC showed
the release but not much in commentary. Big thank you to John &
Ray. I had a discussion on air with the Baldies (ABC) about racing
pigeons and their war exploits, and the Dicken medal etc.
3. Received the second new Banner
4. Doctor Harry’s program on pigeons was very
successful
5. Willy Thiele has suggested the SAHPA look at
placing stickers on all private tossing units to help promote the
sport. W. Griffith can do them for $20/ $40 dollars.
Graham Watson,
Promotion Officer.

Correspondence:
John Harper has contacted the R.S.L and has again been given permission
to
release pigeons at the ANZAC march as the Signal Corps pass by. He has
also
arranged for car passes to be provided by the Adelaide council.
John
has been in discussions with an Ian
Gully who is the PR for the RSL to have a transcript about the pigeons
for the
radio commentators.
Graham
Watson has contacted radio 5AA on Sunday
regarding misinformation aired about racing/feral pigeons.
An email was sent to Doctor Walker for clarification of
things said on air. In the future 5AA
may contact Graham about a segment on pigeons.
Business
arising from the previous minutes:
- A sausage
sizzle to be arranged for the members who helped man the Animal Expo
stand. It will be held at a date to be decided after the racing season
has begun.
- G.Watson
to see Maureen on 31/03/08 at Salisbury club meeting regarding
reimbursement.
- G.Watson
has purchased frames for certificates of appreciation and will deliver
when ready.
- ANZAC
march - refer Correspondence
- Discussions
with Parafield Gardens High school to take place on date to be decided.
- Discussion
about what the SAHPA could do to improve and help with public relations
regarding feral pigeon problems. To help with our image it was
suggested we make traps the same as Willy Thiele uses and rent them out
to the public for a small fee. Willy has offered to make them and Rosie
who receives many calls, would control them and their use.
- The
Promotion Sub Committee strongly urge the Management to bring together
all members and implement a plan for the next 10 years i.e. Purpose /
Vision / Mission.
- Peter
Muirhead, a freelance journalist, was approached to write a Pigeon
article to do with ANZAC day for a major programme. He will endeavour
to pursue Burke’s Backyard.
- A
suggestion to advertise with the Centrelink National News letter called
News for seniors. This is distributed to 2.3million readers and could
be another way to attract new members who are looking for a hobby in
retirement. Costs for this could be shared by all states if we could
get some agreement with them.
Graham
Watson - Promotion
Officer
Please note: Doctor Harry will be running a program about pigeons on ANZAC day channel 7.
Please note: John Harper and the Promotions Committee will be releasing birds near the Cross of Sacrifice on ANZAC day,
hopefully just as the Signals Corps take their salute near the King Williams road bridge over the Torrens.
I am not sure If the ABC or one of the other radio stations will be giving commentary. - Graham Watson
